Recreation center

Architecture / Experience design / Research / Prototyping

Project length - 14 weeks

This project is a place of health and fitness center intended to encourage movement of the body. This project’s main focus was to respond to the site context, create a system within the building, and let the system be the muscle that derives the structure, function as well as the spaces within the building. The building has thick concrete walls  that function as the core of the building, hence the muscle. Within the wall, chill water runs through it and simultaneously absorbs heat from the wall, which keeps the temperature within the wall and spaces beyond the wall constant.

The envelope of the building is a double glass facade with a 4-foot gap in-between, supported by a self standing voronoi tubular structure that also supports the glass. The intensity of the self standing structure varies in response to the suns position at different times of the day. To avoid condensation between the two glass facades, mechanical rooms are strategically placed in all corners in the underground level that uniformly blow air upwards, absorbing heat and leaving the building through the roof.
